- China Mobile announced that its network systems and equipment based on TD-HSUPA (Time Division-High Speed Uplink Packet Access) technology are set to complete network access tests held by China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) by the end of July, 2009, the Sina Tech News reported on July 13. It is anticipated that these systems and equipment will then enter commercial trials at the beginning of August 2009. By late September 2009, China Mobile plans to launch TD-HSUPA terminal products. China Mobile stated that the company will initially upgrade its indoor TD-SCDMA (TD-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) network to TD-HSUPA. To date, the number of base stations based on TD-HSUPA technology has reached one tenth of the total number of base stations built during the third phase of TD-SCDMA network construction.

- Guangdong Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile in Guangdong, has signed an agreement with the Guangzhou municipal government, whereby the operator will invest 18 billion RMB (US$2.6 billion; US$1 = 6.8 RMB) into its wireless city project in Guangzhou within the next five years, the SinoCast Daily Business Beat reported on July 15. Under the five-year agreement, Guangdong Mobile will continue to deploy and improve its TD-SCDMA network while setting up a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) network in Guangzhou. Of the total investment, Guangdong Mobile will earmark 10 billion RMB (US$1.5 billion) for wireless network deployment in Guangzhou, including 12,000 TD-SCDMA base stations and 2,400 WLAN hotspots throughout the city, by 2013.
